Tips for Better Grandparenting

09/26/2018

Before you take on the grandparent role, be very clear with yourself and your adult children as to what you can and can't do. Maybe you really don't want to be the babysitter. Don't assume they can read through your mind. You can offer your support and guidance, while being very clear with your own boundaries as a grandparent.

Here are tips on better grandparenting:

1. Remember, you had your chance already to parent. Your grownup children are likely to take care of their kids in their own way and are doing the best they can. You should always avoid giving unsolicited advice. However, if they ask for your guidance, just reply to their question without judgment.

2. Accept that parenting is not easy but that they are doing a wonderful job (even if you don't agree with every little thing they are doing).

3. You must always respect their boundaries and do not step into the middle... between a grandchild and his/her mum or dad or between the mother and father. In case they ask for your guidance, ask them to be clear about how they believe you can help the current situation.

4. If there are unresolved issues in the family, resolve them quickly for the sake of the family members.

Always strive to work on your role and your relationships. Grownup children still need their parents and, and also, and aside from that, little ones need their grandparents. And certainly, you too will take advantage by having all your loved ones in your life!
